John 4:34
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”

Let me ask you some questions. What drives you? What sustains you? What makes you keep going when others have given up?

It is very true that without the appropriate nourishment our natural bodies would first grow weary, then they would begin to deteriorate and finally expire completely. It is no different with our spirits. If we neglect to feed our spirits they will too grow weak, if not expire altogether. Now there are many ways that we can feed our spirits such as reading the Word of God, prayer, fellowship with other believers and much more but there is one that is vital and often overlooked.

Jesus said in the verse above that “His food is to do the will of God” (James paraphrase). In other words, I find my strength and power in doing what God wants me to do. Maybe you have said to yourself, “I just can’t find the strength to fight this temptation.” or “I don’t have the nerve to tell someone about Jesus.” Of course you don’t. You are leaning on the strength of your own will and not on the will of God. You don’t know what freedom feels like until you have stepped into the will of God and stood up to temptation. You don’t know what true power feels like until you have told a perfect stranger about the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It will renew and enliven your faith to new levels. Why? Because God has created our spirits to be fed and nourished by doing His will.

If you want to be stronger at fighting temptation, then fight temptation. If you want to love people more, then love people more. If you want to have power to do all that God has called you to, then do it. You are strengthened by your obedience to the will of God.

Let me end with this. Do not be discouraged. Don’t give up and don’t let up. Nobody’s physical body can handle 100 push-ups the first time they try. They start with 5 or 10 and then build from there. Followers of Christ aren’t just “born-again”, they are constantly growing into the image of God.
