“The only one who doesn't make mistakes is the one who doesn't do anything.” -- V. I. Lenin

The first key to success in writing is to actually begin to write and submit material for publishing consideration. If it is true that you learn from your mistakes then you need to make a few in order to ‘maximize your learning potential’.

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather a man of value.” -- Albert Einstein

“To achieve great things requires that we become great people.” -- Philip Humbert

One of the most significant attributes of success is that the very success we are searching for doesn’t place an expiration date on your integrity. Sometimes success comes to those who are less interested in who gets the credit than those who desire the spotlight.

The best success is life is to learn that God has shaped our character to conform to His and we allowed Him to do so. Any writing success is simply a bonus.

“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark burn out in a brilliant blaze than it be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.” -- Jack London

History records individuals who enjoyed life to its fullest and succeeded in ways most people only dream of. These rare people understood that fear had no place in a life lived to the max. Rejection only provided the steppingstone they needed to move on to the next plateau. This type of individual was less concerned about what other people thought than they were about the dream they were pursuing. Like Jack London, they were meteors who sparked our imaginations and dared us to ask, “What if?”

“There is a special sadness in achievement, in the knowledge that a long-desired goal has been attained at last, and that life must now be shaped toward new ends.” -- Arthur C. Clarke

This quote is probably the saddest I came across while researching this article. What this quote indicates is that there is nothing higher than moving to a place where you achieve a goal. Certainly it is a “long-desired goal”, yet if that is the sole motivation for writing it can ultimately lead to depression and frustration. You have to have some idea what life will be like after publication – if you don’t have the big picture in view, any success you may have in publishing will seem a rather hollow victory because you reached the end of your dream and there is nothing left to accomplish. Dream big and let God reshape your dream according to His will for your life.
