Are you up to the challenge to see if you qualify for membership in Mensa-the world-famous high-IQ organization?
The following questions from Dr. Abbie F. Salny are similar to those administered on the Mensa Admission Test:
1. Tommy raided little Joey's piggy bank and came away with the same number each of pennies, nickels and dimes. The total was $4.80. How many coins of each denomination had Joey saved?
2. Susie's boyfriend wanted to know her exact age. He asked her younger sister, who said: "Ten years ago, Susie was as old as I am now. In 13 years, I'll be three-fourths her age." How old was Susie at the time her boyfriend got nosy? How old was her sister?
3. If one painter can paint one portrait in 10 hours, how many painters would it take to paint 10 portraits in five hours?
4. What American tree has all five vowels in its name?
5. What is the 11-letter word that all smart people spell incorrectly?
Answers: 1. 30; 2. Susie was 27; her sister was 17; 3. It can't be done. If one portrait takes 10 hours, no number of painters can do one in five hours; 4. Sequoia; 5. Incorrectly.
Scoring: If you aced the quiz or even got one wrong, you may be Mensa material. Find out for sure on Mensa Testing Day. On October 21, 2006, Mensa groups around the country will administer the admission test.
Members, who range in age from 3 to 100, join for various reasons. Some enjoy social events while others exchange ideas from astronomy to music with fellow Mensans.
