What is the best way to select a Kung Fu school?

First, visit the Kung Fu school and, if at all possible, take a few lessons. Observe the students and ask yourself: Are these the types of people I would like to be associated with? Remember that the Kung Fu school is represented by its students.

Next, try to figure out if these students actually learn. Is there a natural progression in ability with the more advanced, intermediate and beginning students? Keep in mind you're going there to learn. Check also to see whether these students learn irrespective of their natural ability. In other words, Michael Jordan is going to look great participating in any athletic endeavor, but unless you have the ability of a Michael Jordan, (and very few of us do), then you want to look at the average student.

Now start to check out their facilities. Are they clean and well-kept? Pride in one's Kung Fu school will show up in the appearance of the school itself.

Last, and of course not least, check out the Si Fu (or instructor). What are his credentials? Do you feel any sort of bonding with this person? Is this someone that generates immediate respect? Now look at his ability. You already know whether or not he can teach you, from observing his students. But is this man a professional? This is not to say that there are not some fine Kung Fu teachers who also work in other professions, but a professional Kung Fu school should have professional teachers.

Lastly, on your way out of the school, just notice how you feel. That should be your final guideline for choosing the right academy for you.
