Is 13 unlucky? Not since 13 SEER became the standard for cooling comfort.

Effective January 23, 2006, residential cooling units sold must be 13 SEER or higher. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, the method used to judge how efficiently an air conditioner performs.

SEER is the consumer's rule of thumb to rate how efficient a unit is and if you're getting real value out of the energy dollars you spend. The higher your unit's SEER rating, the higher the energy-efficiency rating. Effective power use means you're getting the best value for your energy dollar.

The new 13 SEER requirement does not mean you have to replace your cooling system now. But when you do decide to replace your cooling unit, installing a unit rated 13 SEER or higher provides maximum efficiency.

When you buy an energy-efficient system, you can ensure it's running at optimum energy performance by having a NATE-certified technician install and regularly service it. North American Technician Excellence Inc. is an independent certification body for HVAC/R technicians. The entire HVAC/R industry supports NATE, including manufacturers, wholesalers and contractors.
