If you have yet to get into the habit of paying special attention to your teeth, you may want to reconsider your dentist's mantra: Brushing daily is key to preventing gum disease.

While it has long been noted that, if left untreated, gum disease will lead to tooth loss, current research shows that it may have far more ill-reaching health effects, including diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

According to the National Institutes of Health, about 200 million U.S adults have some form of gum disease, which is typically characterized by red or swollen gums, loose teeth, pain or bloody gums.

While its mildest form is usually reversible through more thorough dental cleanings, the more severe form is a reason for concern. In this case, bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to major organs, beginning new infections in other parts of the body.

According to Oralbotic Research Inc., the reason that 80 percent of the American population has gum disease is due to basic human error -; both in the way teeth are brushed and in the amount of time spent doing so. The California-based company hopes to combat all forms of gum disease through a new type of toothbrush that takes the guesswork out of the process.

Its product, the HydraBrush - recipient of the prestigious Frost & Sullivan 2005 Oral & Dental Care Product of the Year - is a power toothbrush that enables users to automatically receive proper oral care.

Consider this: Most health professionals recommend their patients brush and massage their gums at least two minutes every time they brush their teeth. However, studies show that most people spend anywhere from 32 to 69 seconds brushing their teeth.

The HydraBrush's unique multi-micro brush head design enables it to perform the same function of a single-headed power toothbrush in 40 seconds or less. All the user has to do is bite into the microbrush heads and guide the brush slowly along the path of the teeth, gently guiding it from the front to the back and back to the front. In this way, the HydraBrush simultaneously brushes all surfaces of the teeth in far less time.
