If you have new dogs or puppies, make sure that it does not develop the ability or behavior of jumping over fences. For dogs, the practice of fence-jumping is act of rewarding itself. When the dog is able go over a fence, it has a sense freedom and tries to get the attention of someone to take notice of its feat.

A dog jumps over a fence due to the following reasons.

- It sees another animal on the other side of the fence and it feels that it needs to chase it or at least scare it off.

- The dog sees a person that it likes on the other side and wants to play. Dogs always seek companionship and it always wants to be with its master.

- The dog is bored and jumping fences is an exciting activity for the animal.

Try to constantly monitor the dog's behavior when it is roaming around the yard. Using dog doors that give access to the yard should be avoided.

Dogs will be discouraged from jumping over a fence if they are accompanied by someone its likes in the yard. Dogs will also be distracted and can be scolded (in a nice way) when it is trying to jump over the fence if it is not alone.

If a dog is able to escape the yard try not to inflict any form of harsh punishment. Inflicting pain and screaming are ineffective ways of training a dog.

A dog will likely never realize that jumping over a fence is unwanted behavior. Dogs associate jumping to a 'good and fun thing do.'

A dog should learn basic training early on its life. A puppy that's around two weeks old can already be trained with basic commands, such as stay, sit and come.

The command ‘stay’ is crucial to teaching a dog not to develop fence-jumping behavior. The master should shout 'stay!' when he sees the dog position itself to jump over a fence.
