Time passes quickly, and for some reason summer seems to be the fastest season of them all. Maybe it's because we're so busy doing things that we don't always realize how quickly it is passing until another season of long days and inactivity descend upon us and give us reason to pause. Whatever the case there are many summer delights that one can overlook along the way. One of my favorite things of summer is the bounty of fruits, vegetables and other foods that can only be found this time of year.
Living in Maryland near the Eastern Shore, summer is a time for growing and harvesting. Take a drive anywhere down here and you'll see endless fields of corn standing tall like an army of soldiers. Much of this corn is 'Silver Queen' a sweet white corn that is a standard fare of summer feasts. Many people swear that this is the best tasting corn available, but I also enjoy the various varieties of yellow corn. To me, much of it is as sweet if not sweeter than 'Silver Queen'. In any case, it is a delight regardless of whether it's White or Yellow.
Another summer treat that is my personal favorite is the 'Maryland Tomato'. When you're talking tomatoes you could be referring to Beefsteak, Beefmaster, Big Boy, Big Girl, Cherry or literally hundreds of other varieties. However, whatever type of tomato you're referring to, they all have one thing in common, the TASTE! Farmers tell me it's the combination of soil, heat, humidity, and especially the hot nights that produce the delicacy called the Maryland Tomato. All I know is that you won't find a better tasting tomato than what you have in the Mid Atlantic region. If you travel through here in the summer, don't miss this taste sensation.
Summer around here also produces wonderful tasting fruit such as cantaloupes and watermelons. There's something almost magical about enjoying a cantaloupe that was lying in the field last night, picked by a farmer this morning, and enjoyed by you today. By the way, not all fruit stands along the road will be selling fruit and vegetables that they grow, so don't hestitate to ask them if the produce is local or out of state. You may not always get a truthful answer, but most times you will.
Summer is indeed a season of bounty, so be sure to get your fill of it before it is gone. Sitting here enjoying a fruit salad of watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches and nectarines seems to make the summer heat more bearable and TASTY!
