Whether you have never regularly worn a fragrance, are tired of your old one, or would like to expand your repertoire for the new season, choosing a new perfume fragrance is something that should be done carefully, particularly since fragrance products can be expensive. A little often goes a long way, so if you buy it and end up not liking it, it can result in a lot of waste, not to mention that you are now back where you started. Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting a fragrance.
First, you may not know that fragrances interact with your own personal scent and temperature. If you think about it, you already know that different people smell different, and we’re not talking about when they’re sweaty or haven’t showered in a few days, just in general, all the time. So you want to make sure that the perfume you purchase works for you. That means, that even if you love it on your best friend, it won’t necessarily do the same for you.
Following from that, this also means that if you love a fragrance on a sample card in a magazine or sprayed on a piece of paper at a department store, it will not smell the same on you, because the paper does not have any odor to react with the perfume, nor does it have any heat to assist the scent in emanating. The conclusion? You have to try it on yourself. Take a tester and apply the fragrance to the same spots (or at least a couple of them) that you would if you were putting on fragrance at home.
Another key rule to follow is that you should not trust just your first impression of a scent. Walk around in it a while to make sure you get the full experience. Perfume fragrances have three stages, or “notes” that are designed to reveal themselves over time as you wear a fragrance. So your first whiff of a perfume will be only the head, or top, notes. Fragrance makers know that as with people, the first impression is important, so these scents will usually be the strongest of the three sets, and will set the character of the perfume. The heart, or middle, notes, will begin to surface after the initial head notes begin to fade. This may take a few minutes or as long as an hour. These scents are designed to round out the head notes and make the scent more complex, as well as more subtle. Base notes appear as the two top notes fade and give a sort of foundation to the scent, complementing it and giving it lasting strength, and are usually experienced after about half an hour.
