It’s hard to believe that we live in a day and age that there are so many people that are willing to share tragic and personal stories on national television for all to see and hear. Having your own talk show though is no easy task. There have been many new hosts that have not been able to handle the task of drawing and retaining a big audience. One of the most successful shows has been the Dr. Phil show. He has managed to captivate and draw a huge loyal audience and simply put, seems to nail most issues right on the head every time.
Just recently there has been a new rant and rave talk show host that is just now starting to hit the main stream and his name is Dr. Keith. Dr. Keith, whom is also known as Dr. Keith Ablow, is the new Dr. Phil according to some. Though he does not get accompanied by his wife on the show, he is a family man and vows to first and foremost protect kids. When I first watched a few of his episodes I had a hard time with Dr. Keith’s seemingly timid approach, line of questioning, and show format. I even thought his guests were a bit hard to manage. Now that I have a few shows under my belt I can see that his topics, approaches, and guests are becoming more appealing to his audience. He even seems to be able to control his guests and lead the discussions a little better.
On Thursday September 28th Dr. Keith Ablow aired a show on polygamy. Dr. Keith spoke with people who choose to live a polygamist lifestyle. From HBO's hit series "Big Love" to the infamous trial of Warren Jeffs, our country seems to be fascinated with understanding the rationale behind families who choose a polygamous way of life. Dr. Keith interviewed 5 women who have been involved in polygamous relationships to better understand their motivation. One father even had 21 children between himself and three of his wives. Dr. Keith ended the show stating that he could not find any hint of evidence that would suggest that the children of these families were in any shape or form being harmed or abused.
On Friday September 29th, Dr Keith Ablow exposed the new-age phenomenon of cyberbullying, where bullies go beyond the playground, using the Internet to pray on their victims. He interviewed a very demeaning group known as “The Plastics” whom got their name on MySpace. There “The Plastics” use cruel, embarrassing, abrasive, and sometimes threatening tactics to challenge new wannabe members into changing their appearances or wardrobe in order to join. If they do not like the way a new prospect looks then they use their harsh tactics to drive the point home that they are ugly, fat, and unwanted. MySpace has received numerous complaints about this group but so far has not disciplined them to anyone’s knowledge. Felonies might be on the horizon for these young adults in this group according to a lawyer Dr. Keith had on his show. She stated that these kinds of acts online can be prosecutable.
The Dr. Keith Ablow Show may have to continue changing its format, approach, guests, topics, set appearance, and advertising sound bites, but all in all it does look very promising. If Dr. Keith can appear more confident and continue to control his guests he just might get the respect, audience, and the ratings he needs to make it to a bigger market. I have to admit he does have a lot of courage for taking a chance on TV with his career and reputation but he has my utmost respect and attention now. I am definitely looking forward to watching more episodes of the Dr. Keith Ablow Show.
